Setting Out And Engineering Surveys

The specialised field of setting out requires an experienced team of qualified engineering surveyors using high-specification surveying equipment in order to achieve the necessary accuracy.

At Land and Aerial Surveys we use the highest accuracy 1″ Total Stations for mm accuracy where you need it.

Engineering surveys are a vital aspect of any new build or construction project. Without this information, it would be impossible for contractors to complete the building requirements and meet regulations.

So, let’s take a closer look at everything you need to know about this process and how it works.

HOW DOES AN ENGINEERING SURVEY WORK?

When starting a construction project, the first thing to obtain is a set of engineering drawings. At this point, you will need to get in touch with the engineering team and they will review the plans. This will allow the engineer to spot any potential problems.

The plans might not have considered the placement of an important pipe, for example. There are a host of problems that can be avoided by carrying out a survey for engineering purposes.

Once the consultants have signed off on a design, they’ll be able to move on-site and liaise with the surveying team to establish some control points. These will be used as a reference during the construction and will make sure that everything is going in the right place. Once this has been completed, the setting-out process can begin.

WHAT IS SETTING OUT?

One of the most important parts of the building process is the set-out. During this stage, the plans will be transferred onto the property, a boundary will be established and key landmarks will be located.

If you are planning a complex project, a high-rise, for example, it’s possible you’ll need to complete multiple setouts as you might need one for a car park and another for the ground floor and so on.

There are many reasons why setting out is so important. Firstly, this will ensure that the building/footings are in the right place, preventing costly property disputes in the future.

It’s also essential to make sure that the building is made to your specifications and that the construction team will have all the important locations mapped out for them e.g. holding down bolts, and corners- making their job much easier.

Finally, this process will ensure that the construction project is been set out correctly and accurately.
